Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic therapy, is carried out to save a tooth that is infected or severely decayed. Retreatment involves reopening the tooth, cleaning the canals again, and addressing any missed or re-infected areas. This procedure can be more challenging than the original treatment due to scar tissue, complex canal structures, or material left from the previous procedure.

When conventional root canal therapy is not enough to resolve an infection, surgical endodontics, or apicoectomy, may be required. This procedure involves removing the tip of the tooth’s root (the apex) along with any infected tissue around it. An apicoectomy is often the last resort to save a tooth after other endodontic treatments have failed.

Dr. Sim is well-versed in performing apicoectomy procedures, prioritising patient comfort throughout the process.

Using a range of tools and techniques, she makes a small incision in the gum to access the infected area, carefully removing the root tip and sealing the root canal to prevent further infection.

This minor surgical procedure is carried out under local anesthesia or, for anxious patients, IV sedation or general anesthesia, providing a comfortable experience.
