Complex Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic therapy, is carried out to save a tooth that is infected or severely decayed. In complex cases with multiple canals, curved or narrow root structures, or when previous treatments have not been successful, careful technique and thorough evaluation are critical.

Dr. Irene Sim utilises techniques and technologies such as dental microscopes and digital imaging for thorough and effective treatment. She uses the Zeiss Microscope, equipped with augmented visualization modes that provide enhanced illumination, allowing her to see regions that are otherwise difficult to visualise. This helps increase the accuracy and efficiency of the procedures she performs.

In each procedure, Dr. Sim removes infected or damaged tissue from inside the tooth, carefully cleans and shapes the root canals, and seals them to prevent further infection, ensuring both functional and aesthetic results.

Corrective Root Canal Treatment

In some cases, a tooth that has undergone a root canal treatment may develop infections or complications, necessitating retreatment. Retreatment involves reopening the tooth, cleaning the canals again, and addressing any missed or re-infected areas. This procedure can be more challenging than the original treatment due to scar tissue, complex canal structures, or material left from the previous procedure.

Dr. Irene Sim focuses on diagnosing and managing cases that require retreatment. She carefully identifies the underlying cause of failure, such as an untreated canal or reinfection, and performs corrections to restore the tooth’s health.

Her thorough approach aims to help patients avoid more invasive procedures like tooth extraction, focusing on preserving the natural tooth and ensuring it remains strong and functional.

Surgical Root Canal Treatment

When conventional root canal therapy is not enough to resolve an infection, surgical endodontics, or apicoectomy, may be required. This procedure involves removing the tip of the tooth’s root (the apex) along with any infected tissue around it. An apicoectomy is often the last resort to save a tooth after other endodontic treatments have failed.

Dr. Sim is well-versed in performing apicoectomy procedures, prioritising patient comfort throughout the process.

Using a range of tools and techniques, she makes a small incision in the gum to access the infected area, carefully removing the root tip and sealing the root canal to prevent further infection.

This minor surgical procedure is carried out under local anesthesia or, for anxious patients, IV sedation or general anesthesia, providing a comfortable experience.

Emergency Endodontics

Dental emergencies, such as severe pain, swelling, or trauma to the teeth, require immediate attention to prevent further complications. Emergency endodontics focuses on addressing urgent cases of infection or damage within the tooth, which may involve root canal treatment to relieve pain and prevent the infection from spreading.

Dr. Irene Sim is committed to providing prompt and effective care for patients facing dental emergencies. Whether it’s due to an acute infection, traumatic injury, or a sudden flare-up of pain, Dr. Sim offers rapid assessment and treatment options to save the tooth and restore oral health. Dr. Irene’s clinic at Nuffield Dental Jewel is fully equipped for urgent care, offering flexible emergency appointments.

IV Sedation & General Anaesthesia
